Restorative dentistry and endodontics

We treat cavities and damaged teeth while preserving as much of their natural structure as possible, using aesthetic materials. This includes endodontics (root canal treatment).

In short

Restorative dentistry treats teeth damaged by decay or trauma while preserving as much of their natural structure as possible, with aesthetic composite fillings. When decay reaches the nerve, endodontics (root canal treatment) makes it possible, in most cases, to save the tooth by eliminating the infection and the pain. Restorative dentistry and endodontics are overseen by Dr. Nicola Angellotti.

Restorative treatment

Restorative dentistry repairs teeth affected by decay or trauma with aesthetic composite materials, restoring function and appearance while keeping invasiveness to a minimum. Only the diseased tissue is removed and the tooth is rebuilt, preserving as much of the healthy part as possible.

When it is needed and the signs of decay

The signs of a cavity can be dark spots, sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods, discomfort when chewing or, in the early stages, no symptoms at all. That is why regular checkups are important: a cavity caught early can be treated simply and conservatively.

Aesthetic composite fillings

Composite fillings are the same color as the natural tooth and are therefore practically invisible. Beyond aesthetics, they allow conservative restorations that bond closely to the tooth. They have replaced the old amalgam fillings, thanks both to their performance and to the way they integrate with the tooth.

Endodontics (root canal treatment)

When decay or trauma reaches the pulp — the tooth's "nerve" — it causes inflammation, pain and a risk of infection. Root canal therapy makes it possible to save the tooth by removing the diseased pulp, disinfecting the canals and sealing them.

How root canal treatment works

Root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia, often in one or two sessions. The root canals are cleaned and shaped, disinfected and hermetically sealed. Once the infection has been eliminated, the pain resolves; in the first few days there may be some temporary discomfort when chewing, which gradually subsides.

After root canal treatment: the crown

A root-canal-treated tooth becomes more fragile: often, especially on back teeth, it is protected with an inlay or a crown, which preserves its function over time. We will advise you case by case, based on how much of the tooth remains.

What happens if it is not treated

A neglected cavity advances deeper until it reaches the pulp and can cause abscesses and severe pain, making more demanding treatment necessary or, in extreme cases, extraction. Acting early means simpler treatment and a better chance of saving the tooth.

  • Aesthetic composite fillings
  • Minimally invasive care, natural tooth preserved
  • Endodontics (root canal treatment) to save the tooth
  • Protection with an inlay or crown when indicated

Frequently asked questions

Does root canal treatment hurt?

It is performed under local anesthesia: as a rule, no pain is felt during the procedure. In fact, it often relieves the very pain caused by the inflamed nerve.

Does a root-canal-treated tooth last?

Yes, it can last a long time, especially if it is protected with an inlay or a crown when indicated and maintained with good hygiene and regular checkups.

Is a crown always needed after root canal treatment?

Not always, but on back teeth it often is: a root-canal-treated tooth is more fragile and the crown or inlay protects it. We assess this based on how much of the tooth remains.

Are fillings white or gray?

We use composites the color of the natural tooth, so they are practically invisible. Old gray amalgam fillings can be replaced.

Can a tooth with a deep cavity be saved?

Often, yes, with restorative treatment or, if the nerve is involved, with root canal treatment. The sooner you act, the better the chances of saving the tooth.
